If you’re looking for the best photo locations in Chicago for engagement photos, or couples sessions, this guide covers some of the most beautiful and iconic spots in the city. From historic buildings, city skyline views, relaxing gardens, insane architecture, and a moody speakeasy. As a Chicago wedding photographer, these are some of my favorite locations that consistently photograph beautifully in every season.

The Art Instiute of Chicago
The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the most iconic and timeless photo locations in the city, and it’s perfect for couples who want photos that feel editorial, elegant, and a little bit old money. Between the historic architecture, the famous lion statues, and the beautiful South Garden, this location feels very classic Chicago and photographs beautifully in every season. It’s especially perfect for dressier sessions and couples who want their photos to feel sophisticated, romantic, and timeless.
gilt bar
Gilt Bar is a perfect photo location for couples who want a moody, speakeasy style atmosphere with a vintage, chic feel. The dark wood, velvet seating, and dim lighting give the space a very old world, romantic look that feels completely different from typical Chicago photo locations. It’s especially perfect for dressy engagement sessions, winter photos, or couples who want something that feels more editorial and intimate.
The Financial District
Chicago’s Financial District is one of the most dramatic and architectural photo locations in the city. The tall historic buildings along LaSalle Street create a beautiful corridor, and the Board of Trade adds that very iconic, old Chicago feel. This area is perfect for couples who want something that feels editorial, timeless, and very true to the city (especially if you love architecture!) with a more city focused backdrop. Morning and early evening are especially beautiful here when the light filters between the buildings.
Chicago Cultural Center
The Chicago Cultural Center is one of the most beautiful indoor photo locations in Chicago, making it a perfect option for winter, rainy days, or anytime you want an elegant architectural backdrop. The building is known for its stunning details, including the famous Tiffany glass dome, grand staircases, and intricate mosaics. It’s perfect for couples who want photos that feel timeless, elegant, and a little more architectural while still being completely indoors.
Univeristy of Chicago
The University of Chicago campus is perfect for couples who want a romantic, European inspired backdrop without leaving the city. The historic Gothic architecture, ivy covered buildings, and beautiful quads make this location feel timeless and elegant, especially in the fall when the leaves start to change. There are so many beautiful spots within walking distance, which makes it great for a full engagement session with lots of variety in a small area.
North Ave Beach
North Avenue Beach is one of the best photo locations in Chicago if you want the skyline in your photos. The beach, boardwalk, and city views are all within walking distance, which gives a lot of variety in one session. It’s especially beautiful at sunset when the light comes over the lake and the skyline lights start to come on, making it perfect for couples who want that classic Chicago skyline look in their photos.
Lurie Gardens
Lurie Garden is one of the most beautiful garden photo locations in Chicago, right in the middle of Millennium Park. The mix of flowers, greenery, and the Chicago skyline in the background makes it a perfect spot for couples who want something that feels both natural and very Chicago. It’s especially pretty in the summer and early fall when the garden is full and in bloom, and the boardwalk paths make for really beautiful, romantic photos.
Washington Square
The Gold Coast is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Chicago for photos, especially if you love historic homes, brownstones, and cozy tree lined streets. The vintage architecture and soft light through the trees make this area feel romantic and timeless, and it’s perfect for couples who want a more relaxed, neighborhood feel rather than a busy downtown location. There are also so many coffee shops and little cafés in the area, which makes it fun to stop in for a few cozy, candid photos during your session and adds a more personal, lifestyle feel to your gallery.
